X-Men: Foundations
part 2: Changing World Summary
The Xavier Institute for Gifted Students has graduated its first class.
Scott Summers, Ororo Munroe, and Jean Grey, with the help of Hank McCoy and Warren Worthington III, have spent the last two years studying under the watchful eye of Professor Charles Xavier. As they have pursued their conventional educations, they have begun learning to control their mutant abilities – their gifts – and they have accepted Charles Xavier’s challenge to use their mutant abilities for the benefit of society. For this noble purpose, these six strong individuals have laid the foundations of the X-Men. Forming a super-powered team of mutant heroes, ready willing and able to pursue Charles Xavier’s dream of creating a world where baseline humans and mutants alike can one day safely and peacefully coexist. Xavier has one more lesson for his first class, a lesson that cannot be properly learned from within the comfortable confines of the Xavier Institute. He aims to send his gifted youngsters out into the wider world to pursue their purpose there. The promise and purpose of a new generation, ready to lead a changing world into the light of a new day; this also is a part of their mission, and a part of his dream. But there are still more questions than answers in the world surrounding them. They are mutants in a world not yet alerted to their presence. There will be emerging threats from the rapidly changing outside world, emerging enemies – old and new – ready to test them. They cannot take their safety for granted. They are students going out into a new world of self-discovery, navigating new friends and new adversaries, first loves and first heartbreaks. Learning, through the satisfaction of their successes and the sting of their failures, that everyone around them is fighting that same battle – each in their own ways. Living through triumphs and mistakes, finding new faults and flaws and fresh inner strength. Growing through study and with life experience. Trusting in the help of friends and allies to seek truth and to struggle forward together. Here to solve problems and to be solutions, not just in their own lives but intertwined throughout the everyday battles of everyone they meet along the way. They are Xavier’s young stars, burning bright with the light of his dream and their own hopes for a brighter future. The stars burn. Sometimes they fall. But they always light the way forward.
